REP. BEN WEST SHOULD APOLOGIZE FOR RACIST & DEROGATORY COMMENTS
West's Comments Disappointing

(Nashville) - At a recent Davidson County Democrat Party's legislative breakfast, State Representative Ben West made racist and derogatory comments about his former Republican campaign opponent, Juan Borges, a highly decorated Metro Nashville police officer.

According to a video recording of the breakfast posted on YouTube.com, West said "there was a Hispanic, Republican policeman who ran against me. I still don't know what the hell that is" followed by laughter from the group.

"I am totally appalled by Ben West's comments. It is obvious his intention was to gain laughs based on a tasteless joke. Racially motivated humor is repulsive and it is disappointing Ben West chose to partake in it. Tennesseans expect more out of their elected officials.

"Juan Borges is a good man and a fine public servant. As a police officer, he risks his life everyday to protect and serve the people of Nashville, people like Ben West. Juan Borges deserves an immediate apology from Representative West for his shameful comments," said Chris Devaney, executive director of the Tennessee Republican Party.
