BORGES ANNOUNCES IMMIGRATION PLAN
July 10, 2006

NASHVILLE-Juan Borges, candidate for State House of Representatives for District 60 today announced his three point plan to combat illegal immigration.

  1. Denying state benefits to illegal aliens
    • Government programs such as welfare and state-funded healthcare should be exclusive to legal residents
    • Voting privileges apply only to legal citizens
  1. Issuing Drivers’ licenses only to legal residents
    • All Tennesseans must pass an English only drivers’ license exam to ensure highway safety for all drivers
    • Must present proof of identity and citizenship or proof of residency to obtain drivers’ license
  1. Cracking down on businesses that hire illegal aliens
    • Increase fines on employers that knowingly hire illegal immigrants
    • Authorize local law enforcement officials to uphold immigration laws
    • Simplify legal residency verification process for business owners
    • Prohibit awarding state contracts to businesses that knowingly employ illegal immigrants.

“When it comes to immigration policy, no one is better poised to go from law enforcer to lawmaker. As a police officer, I experience problems with illegal immigration first hand and am ready to use that experience to help reform immigration legislation if elected to represent the people of District 60,” said Borges.

Tennessee is home to more than 100,000 illegal immigrants according to the Pew Hispanic center.
