"Two
Candidates, Two Backgrounds Face Off"
July 17, 2006
WKRN
One of the key legislative races this year pits a Democrat with a well known
name against a Republican who would make history if elected. The outcome of
the race between incumbent Ben West and political newcomer Juan Borges will
help determine the balance of power in the state House of Representatives.
Ben West Jr. carries the name of his father who, as mayor, shepherded
Nashville through the historic civil rights era of the 60's.
Juan Borges runs El Protector, the name of the Hispanic outreach program for
Metro police. Democrat West has long represented the 60th house district
that includes the Hermitage and Donelson areas of Nashville, along with some
of Antioch. It's a district that's undergoing change with many new faces and
nationalities. Puerto Rican born Juan Borges, who's been in Nashville 20
years, is one of them.
Ben West believes he's kept up with the changing district and rejects a
characterization that the race is about old Nashville versus new
Nashville. Borges downplays the idea that he'll make history as the first
male Hispanic ever elected to the Tennessee legislature.
The two faced each other on July 17th at a neighborhood forum, but for now,
the two are sounding alike on major issues. Undoubtedly, the differences on
issues will soon emerge as much as the difference in backgrounds.
