""El
Protector" Running for Office"
August 14, 2006
WKRN
He's become the face of crime prevention in Nashville's growing Hispanic
community, but now, some wonder if a political campaign has put a dent in
the El Protector Program. Officer Juan Borges decided to take on longtime
state legislator Ben West. Borges has become a name in the state's political
circles but many Hispanic activists fear that notoriety could have its
consequences.
Borges' position on immigration is that people must come to the U.S. legally
and abide by the laws. Borges is taking on immigration in his campaign to
run for Tennessee State House in District 60. But he says that in no way
affects his performance at work, where he runs the El Protector program,
which serves as a liaison between the Hispanic community and Metro police.
But some members of the Hispanic community feel that the El Protector
program isn't working out and Borges' tough stance on illegal immigration
makes them question his loyalty.
The man known as El Protector insists that his political goals and beliefs
haven't affected the way he approaches his work. As his political campaign
progresses, he hopes so do his relations with the community.
