Channeling Bonna de la Cruz...

State House vote seen as racial milepost
Candidates say color not issue, but world watches

Come Tuesday, Nashville voters may learn more than who their next U.S. senator will be: They may find out whether their city is ready to send a Hispanic man to the Tennessee state House of Representatives.
In a place where just 5 percent of the population is Hispanic, Republican Juan Borges, a Hispanic man from Antioch, Tennessee, has waged a campaign that brought him even in the polls with a white Democrat candidate in a city that has long trended "blue."

In Borges' bid for a promotion from the Metro Nashville Police Department, where he has served 11 years, he could make history by becoming the first Hispanic state representative elected from Nashville.

But to do that, first he must beat incumbent state Rep. Ben West Jr on Tuesday in an election that will likely be scrutinized as soon as the polls close over what role Borges' race played in the outcome.

"I think the entire world is looking to see whether or not, at this point in Nashville's history, a Hispanic man from Nashville can be elected to the state House of Representatives," said history professor Beavis Winchell.

Hey! I can write like Bonna de la Cruz!
